Webmail Upgraded!

We are pleased to inform you that all WebMail mail boxes have now been upgraded from 250 MB to 1 GB. This upgrade is part of 1-nethost's continued development plan to provide bigger and more powerful services at the same price.

IP Addresses (FTP & Mail)

We have had a number of customers contact us asking if it is ok to use FTP server or Mail server IP addresses to connect to these services rather than the domain name.

Again the same situation applies that we may have to change IP addresses at any time so please ensure all your FTP software, mail software, SSH software etc is setup to use ftp.your-domain.com or mail.your-domain.com or www.your-domain.com to ensure you can always connect to the right service.

After the updates we made last month we have had some more great suggestions from you, please have a read of the updated features below.

Distribution Lists

The distribution lists feature in eXtend has been updated so you can now bulk subscribe an existing list of email addresses rather than adding one address at a time. You can also now send emails to your distribution list using HTML or plain text, finally we have increased the number of users you can have on each list to 2500.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind customers that we have a zero tolerance policy on users sending unsolicited email, in the event that the Heart Internet system is deliberately used for this purpose the users account will be suspended.

Zend Optimizer for PHP5

Zend Optimizer, the popular PHP application that helps enhance the running speed of PHP scripts has been enabled on PHP5 on all servers. This feature is also enabled on PHP4.

Email

  • All mailboxes have now been upgraded from 50 MB to 100 MB.
  • WebMail storage has been upgraded from 100 MB to 250 MB.
  • IMAP has been enabled on all mailboxes allowing you to connect to any of our mailservers using IMAP. With IMAP your mail is stored on the server, you can create folders and delete email and all these actions happen on the server. This means that you can use any IMAP compatible mail client such as Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Outlook on any computer connected to the Internet to read your email. Each mailbox can store up to 100 MB of email.

Web Servers

  • PHP4 has been upgraded to 4.4.7 and PHP5 to 5.2.3 on all web servers.
  • SOAP support has been added to PHP5 allowing PHP programmers to interact with SOAP based web services.
  • Ruby has been upgraded to 1.8.5 on all web servers.
  • Imagemagick and Ghostscript enabled and updated on all web servers.

eXtend

  • Email Filter Logs have been updated so you can have the log emailed to you immediately.
  • Junk Mail Filters have been updated so you can choose to have the subject of an email that is suspected as SPAM changed to "***SPAM*** Original Subject". To enable this feature visit the Junk Mail Filters page in the Email Configuration area of eXtend.
  • Zencart upgraded to the latest version, you can install a new copy from the CGI/PHP Scripts area in eXtend.

eXtend - New Scripts to Install

  • RoundCube Webmail - RoundCube Webmail is a browser-based multilingual IMAP client with an application-like user interface. It provides full functionality you expect from an e-mail client, including MIME support, address book, folder manipulation, message searching and spell checking. Once installed you can use RoundCube to access any mailbox on our servers using IMAP. Ideal for anyone wanting their own Webmail installation.
  • Gallery - Share your pictures with others or view them over the internet. Upload your pictures while on holiday so you can take more. Create groups of people who can see different sets of pictures e.g. you might let your football team see pictures from matches .
  • MediaWiki - A collaborative technology for organizing information on Web sites. Work with others to maintain information. For example if you run a business you can share information with your colleagues at the same time as documenting it for yourself.
  • SugarCRM - A Customer Relationship Management application - This application lets a business keep track of its relationships with its customers. Users can manage customer accounts, contacts, sales leads, calls, meetings etc. A dashboard showing the most successful leads, the sales pipeline, and the month-by-month outcomes for opportunities in the pipeline can be displayed.

PHP Security

If you are using PHP on your website we ask that you please read the following carefully.

We have noticed a significant number of PHP websites are being compromised due to vulnerable PHP code. Spammers are scanning millions of websites on the Internet looking for PHP scripts that can be exploited to send spam. When they find a script that has a loophole they send thousands of email messages through the script, often taking down the website or severely impacting website performance.

Generally these loopholes exploit code using parameters from a form being passed straight to a mail command or page include without being checked for extra characters. These problems include line feeds in email names and addresses, or including any page passed to the script.

When we find a site that is being exploited we often have to disable scripting for the whole site or at least for the compromised script (if we can identify it), this can mean unexpected downtime for your website. This problem affects all PHP websites available on the Internet, not just ones hosted by 1-nethost.

This issue can often be resolved by upgrading to the latest version of the script or in the case of custom scripts asking your developer to close the loophole that has been exploited.

We would ask that you carry out a security audit on your PHP scripts to ensure they are not vulnerable. Whilst we cannot carry out this process for you if you do have any questions then please feel free to contact us.

Webmail Upgrade

A big thank you to all our customers who have requested new features and upgrades to our Webmail service, we know that our Webmail system is critical to many of you and we have been working on a major upgrade for some time. Thanks to you, our Webmail service is better than ever!

Our new Webmail is even easier to use, is faster to display messages and works in a wide range of web browsers with many advanced features. Some of the great new features include:

New Folder Support

Our updated Webmail system allows you to create as many folders as you need to easily store and organise your mail. You can store up to 100 MB of mail in your folders.

Enhanced Calendar

This handy feature allows you to manage appointments (tasks) on a quarterly, annual, or daily basis.

Outlook-to-Webmail Sync

Microsoft Outlook can be synchronized with your Webmail account so that contacts and scheduler data can be shared between a desktop and Webmail client. If a user adds a new appointment (task) or contact while using Outlook or Webmail, the data will be automatically synchronised between the applications.

Enhanced Address Book

Webmail's enhanced address book functionality allows you to import and export contacts from/to CSV (comma separated values) file format. You can also sync your Webmail account with your existing address-books.

Spell Checker

Spell check your email before sending it using the built in spell checker with a new and updated language database.

Mailbox Sorting & Searching

Messages contained in your Inbox can be sorted by subject, date, or email address. You can search your mailbox for keywords, allowing quick and easy access to your stored email.

Rich HTML Messages

Create eye-catching emails using different fonts and colours or by embedding pictures and sounds. Why not add your company logo or a customised signature? You can easily attach files to your emails to send to friends, family or colleagues.

Email Filters

Create rules to move specific messages or block unwanted senders altogether.

Along with the new features we have also implemented a new hardware platform for the Webmail system to operate on. This uses state-of-the-art hardware load balancers to distribute traffic to our to our cluster of Webmail servers. Your messages are centrally stored on giant disk arrays and backed up each day, first to another disk array and then to tape which is stored offsite.

Locked Area Lite

We are pleased to announce that we have upgraded eXtend to install the latest version of Locked Area Lite.

Locked Area Lite is a sophisticated password protection and membership management system that gives your users access to a password protected members area. Locked Area Lite manages the users login details and allows the webmaster to email and manage users from a simple web interface.

The new version has many new features so current users may want to install the new copy to test it out.

PHP5 Update

PHP5 is now more popular than ever, many of you will know that to use PHP5 on our system your PHP file needs to end with .php5. We have now made a modification to our system so that you can set PHP5 to be the default version of PHP5 just for your website.

This means that you won't have to rename all your files to use PHP5. To set PHP5 as the default simply create a file within your public_html directory called .htaccess and place the following line in the file:-

SetEnv DEFAULT_PHP_VERSION 5

You can also still use the file extension .php5 if you want to run some files as PHP4 and some as PHP5.
